B Healthy 2
This second part of the two part vitamin, B
complex series, begins with a simple questionnaire. A few seconds of your time
will give you a rough indication of your current vitamin B status. Although
they have many uses in the body, the B vitamins are particularly important to
the release of energy from food. Simple carbohydrates like sugar and white
flour contain little besides calories. These denatured foods need B vitamins
to be metabolized. Then, the energy carried by the calories can be better
utilized.
In addition, the Bs are involved in maintaining
the health of the hair, skin, nerves, blood cells, immune system,
hormone-producing glands, and digestive system. They are also essential to the
synthesis of genetic materials such as DNA and RNA. This second issue covers
the uses of vitamins B12 and folate/folic acid, plus the co-factors
choline, inositol, and PABA. In addition, we discuss the difference between
folate and folic acid. Another feature is a discussion of the effects of
certain B vitamins on lowering homocysteine levels. High blood levels
of homocysteine is now accepted as a risk factor for heart disease right along
with smoking and high blood pressure.
