Vitamin C... Even Better Than You Thought

     You eat well. You certainly get at least 60 milligrams of vitamin C every day from the fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. Since that's the RDA, you're sure that you won't get scurvy. On the other hand, you've read a lot about the benefits of ingesting extra vitamin C -- amounts equal to more produce than you would willingly eat in a day. You want all those advantages, so you take vitamin C in supplement form. Well, you little smarty, that turned out to be an even better idea than you thought.

     A recent study compared people like you who eat adequate vitamin C and also take vitamin C supplements with people who eat sufficient C but do not take supplements. Guess what? During a 10 year period of time, there was a much lower death rate among the people who took supplements. The difference in deaths from heart disease was particularly marked. In fact, the findings suggest that vitamin C provides greater protection against heart disease than either having low blood cholesterol or eating a low fat diet."
