Sleep Like a Baby... with Melatonin

     Unfortunately many of us do not secure the fundamental and natural sleep we need. As one writer said, "The 'American dream' leaves us with little time for dreaming." During the past century, we have reduced our average sleep by more than 20 percent, or nearly two hours per day. Just this alone could account in large part for the stress, disease, and accidents that we suffer as a nation. In fact, sleep experiments have shown that just two hours "sleep debt" for five nights can put us in a bad mood, leaving us sick and unhappy. The greater the debt, the greater the impact.

     About one-third of us, 40 million Americans, report chronic sleep trouble. If this seems like a lot of individuals, that's because it is. Plus, there is a terrible interest on that debt. One study showed that people sleeping fewer than six hours nightly have a 30 percent higher death rate from cancer, heart disease, stroke, and all other causes than those who sleep seven or eight hours per night. Insomniacs have twice the number of auto accidents.

     Even the Exxon Valdez oil spill was eventually blamed on a third mate suffering from sleep deprivation and extreme fatigue. Several studies have demonstrated that supplementary melatonin has tranquilizing and...
