Herbal Immunity

     From time immemorial, humans have used herbs for health and healing. Since sound immune function is basic to wellness, it follows that some herbs have a direct effect on the immune system. In fact, herbalist Daniel Mowrey has written, "There is perhaps no other system...for which...herbs are better suited." Clearly, herbs and immunity go together like health and wholeness.

     There are two classifications of immune herbs: those that enhance the immune system, functioning to maintain health; and those that reinforce the immune system, helping to restore health. In some cases, these capabilities overlap. For example, echinacea taken in small amounts through time works as a preventative while larger amounts can be used to help combat acute infections such as colds, flu, and fever. In this issue of Nutrition News, we will consider the immune enhancing herbs.

     These have also been called the "tonic" herbs. Tonics are natural substances that can both restore and support our equilibrium. A definitive quality of these botanicals is bidirectionality. For example...
