     In a recent article, physician Richard A. Kunin commented that fatigue is the number one complaint doctors hear from their patients. No doubt. Although Americans have the "highest standard of living" in the world, the actual quality of our lives is up for serious question. People complain constantly of being over-stressed. Poor diet, insufficient rest, lack of regular exercise, too much work, emotional overload, and even the adverse effects of environmental pollutants all contribute to our national fatigue. Any one of these could result in a chronic lack of energy. Too many of us can cite all six.

     In recent years, a number of energy metabolites normally produced by the body have become available as nutritional supplements. Their names appear in bold in the preceding discussion of cell energy metabolism. In many respects, we owe this development to bodybuilders and other athletes, people who are always looking for ways to stretch the envelope of physical strength and endurance.
