It’s Time to...Get Fit!

     Most of us could define fitness, coming up with a definition that would include good health, strength, and endurance. All three products of regular exercise and nutritious food. Unfortunately, only 22 percent of us qualify as fit. While the activity level of 54 percent is defined as "inadequate," nearly one in every four adults is completely sedentary. That means 24 percent of all adults truly are couch potatoes.

     With these numbers in mind, it is not surprising to learn that lack of physical exercise accounts for an estimated 250,000 deaths per year (12 percent of all deaths). In addition, more than half us are overweight. Of course, lack of exercise is a contributing factor. In this issue, we take a closer look at the benefits of regular exercise, the "diet of champions," supportive supplements, and ways to just do it!

     Besides including an abbreviated Glycemic Index, "Get Fit!" draws from the information, suggestions, and encouragement offered by triathalon champions (and partners) Mark Allen and Julie Moss in their book Workouts for Working People (with Bob Babbit, Villard Books, 2000).
