It’s Time to...Get Fit!
Most of us could define fitness,
coming up with a definition that would include good health, strength, and
endurance. All three products of regular exercise and nutritious food.
Unfortunately, only 22 percent of us qualify as fit. While the activity level
of 54 percent is defined as "inadequate," nearly one in every
four adults is completely sedentary. That means 24 percent of all adults
truly are couch potatoes.
With these numbers in mind, it is not
surprising to learn that lack of physical exercise accounts for an estimated
250,000 deaths per year (12 percent of all deaths). In addition, more than
half us are overweight. Of course, lack of exercise is a contributing factor.
In this issue, we take a closer look at the benefits of regular exercise, the
"diet of champions," supportive supplements, and ways to just do
it!
Besides including an abbreviated
Glycemic Index, "Get Fit!" draws from the information, suggestions,
and encouragement offered by triathalon champions (and partners) Mark Allen
and Julie Moss in their book Workouts for Working People (with Bob
Babbit, Villard Books, 2000).
