The Two Sides of Soy

    In the last few years, we have witnessed a tremendous growth in the sales of soyfoods. This is partially due to the FDA awarding health claim status to certain soy proteins that support heart health. However, sales have also been driven by studies indicating that soy can help with diabetes and kidney problems, help prevent osteoporosis, alleviate menopausal symptoms, and be protective against cancer. If you follow the news, you’ve probably gotten an earful about soy and soyfoods. This includes a feature on 20/20 (June 9, 2000) which covered contradictory soy research and cautioned, "There are now some serious questions being raised about this miracle food." If you’re feeling confused, you’re not alone. It can be difficult to make lifestyle changes in the face of often conflicting scientific information.
