Big Fat Lies
Early in 2001, the USDA issued a report stating that
although all diets work for weight loss, what people need is a way of eating
that promotes the long term maintenance of a healthy weight. In addition, the
USDA now espouses a moderate fat diet for weight loss and weight maintenance.
This comes at a time when 61 percent of the population is overweight. Type 2
diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions, affecting even youngsters.
Ann Louise Gittleman, MS, CNS, is one of the foremost
nutritionists in the US today. She applauds the USDA’s current position on
weight maintenance and the necessity of fat in a healthy diet. But the USDA
advice doesn’t go far enough. People need to know about healthy fats.
With her premier book, the now classic Beyond Pritikin (1989), Ann
Louise became the first nutritionist in the country to decry the fat-free
craze and champion the need for all of us to put oils rich in essential fatty
acids into our diets.
This issue of Nutrition News is an interview with
Ms. Gittleman, discussing her book Eat Fat, Lose Weight (Keats, 2001).
Her message on the importance of getting sufficient essential fatty acids is
imperative to weight loss, weight management, and long term good health.
