Ready or Not...
Some aspects of aging can be forestalled for
decades. Not so menopause. Whatever a woman does, however rigorously she
attends to her health,....all women who reach the age of menopause stop
ovulating.
— Natalie Angier in Woman, An Intimate Geography
It’s a fact that by the year 2015, nearly 50
percent of all women in the United States will be menopausal.
The only rule for this life transition is that
each woman’s experience is unique. It follows that the signs of
perimenopause are both diverse and unpredictable They can be mild, moderate,
or severe. Some lucky gals, ten percent of us, have no significant indications
that they are menopausal. They just stop having periods. At the opposite end
of the spectrum, others may experience symptoms for years. (A few women still
have hot flashes for long after they have become postmenopausal.)
Frequently, these changes are not identified for
what they are. Because hormone levels are in flux and because so little is
known about the variations, patterns, and physical, mental, and emotional
consequences of these fluctuations, women who do seek professional help are
often misdiagnosed. In my personal experience, women in transition are
sometimes given antidepressants and/or thyroid medication when neither of
these is the actual source of their discomfort. When you use the check list in
this issue (below), you begin to appreciate the complicated roller coaster
ride many women are experiencing.
