     Heart disease remains the No. 1 killer in the US, taking out over 720,000 individuals each year.... This is far more people than cancer and infectious diseases combined. High cholesterol levels remain a risk factor for heart disease. In addition, another, perhaps superior, marker for risk is gaining recognition. This marker is homocysteine.

     A study in JAMA in 1992, a part of the Physicians’ Health Study, alerted researchers to a new marker for heart disease. It showed that over a five year period, healthy physicians, with no prior history of heart disease, who had highly elevated homocysteine levels were more than three times as likely to have heart attacks as their colleagues with normal levels. There is growing evidence that homocysteine may be a prime factor in causing heart disease
