			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It seems like every year or so the media runs a story slamming supplements. They bring out some pathetic “authority” who confuses “fortified” with “nutrition” and says that supplements are a complete waste of money.</p>

<p>Then they trot out studies that often cherry pick data or intentionally mislead the public. The studies are given credibility because they appear in the <a href="http://archinte.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/171/18/1625"><em>Archives of Internal Medicine</em></a> and <a href="http://newhope360.com/blog/jama-studies-bring-tough-questions-dietary-supplement-researchers"><em>Journal of the American Medical Association</em></a> (JAMA).</p>
<p>Typically the <a href="http://newhope360.com/research/new-study-supplements-effects-older-women-flawed-nutrition-experts-say?page=2">supplement industry responds</a> in an intelligent and consumer centric way but on the defensive nonetheless. Who could blame us?</p>
<p>The same journals that publish the supplement damning studies sell the majority of advertising space to pharmaceutical companies. <a href="http://www.nutritionnews.com/medicine/could-there-be-a-reason-dietary-supplement-research-is-under-reported/">Could there be a reason supplement research is under reported?</a>  The <a href="http://www.nutritionnews.com/supplement/pharma-bias-still-present-in-supplement-research/">pharma bias</a> drives negative supplement studies are what we have come to expect.</p>
<p>Pharmaceutical companies have a legal payola system to bribe doctors and the <a href="http://www.lef.org/Vitamins-Supplements/Item33835/Pharmocracy.html?source=search&amp;key=Pharmocracy%20by%20William%20Faloon">FDA regulates for special interest profits</a> at the cost of national health for all of us. The deck sure seems stacked against us, doesn’t it?</p>
<p>But wait just a minute. With this latest batch of negative press, nobody seemed to notice. Consumers didn’t care. Maybe they’re all <a href="http://wearethe99percent.tumblr.com/">“occupied”</a> with other interests these days.</p>
<p>We’ve reached a tipping point. Consumers, especially discerning natural food shoppers, are no longer swayed by fear tactics and misinformation. They have their own personal experience of greater health and vitality to trust. That’s pretty hard to beat.</p>
<p>What works for health is also one of the most shared experiences throughout social networks. When it comes to health care, the emperor has no clothes.</p>
<p>It doesn’t take <a href="http://wikileaks.org/w/index.php?search=health+&amp;ns0=1&amp;title=Special%3ASearch&amp;fulltext=Search&amp;fulltext=Search">Wiki Leaks</a>to tells us either. There are more than enough of us</p>

<p>who know better. Many are out in the streets protesting right now and they understand the connections between our health and our environment.</p>
<p>Now is the time to capitalize on the base of savvy, well educated customers we’ve attracted to the value of natural products and nutritional supplements. Nutritional education is the basis for good health and good business.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h4><a href="http://www.nowfoods.com/NewsEvents/081509.htm">NOW Foods</a> has developed a rapid screening test to detect adulterants in  dietary supplements, which it hopes will change the perception that  dietary supplements are ‘unregulated’.</h4>

<p><a href="http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQChwt1X3y43O9Zt8WbWOUTY2ZPuaQIOl4mu9nxofzciE5pgEyQOg"><img class="alignleft" src="http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQChwt1X3y43O9Zt8WbWOUTY2ZPuaQIOl4mu9nxofzciE5pgEyQOg" alt="" width="221" height="228" /></a>The combination of<a href="http://mmrc.caltech.edu/FTIR/FTIRintro.pdf"> Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy</a> with  <a href="http://las.perkinelmer.com/content/TechnicalInfo/TCH_FTIRATR.pdf">attenuated total reflectance (ATR)</a> was found to detect the presence of  known adulterants, including erectile dysfunction drugs, steroids,  weight loss drugs and Melamine.</p>
<p>The test requires only thirty seconds grinding in an analytical mill  prior to the scan, which itself takes less than 10 minutes, according to  a report by NOW Foods’ Andrea Champagne and Katrina Emmel in the  peer-review journal <a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleURL&amp;_udi=B6THW-51MDSC2-1&amp;_user=10&amp;_coverDate=12%2F04%2F2010&amp;_alid=1613158564&amp;_rdoc=1&amp;_fmt=high&amp;_orig=search&amp;_origin=search&amp;_zone=rslt_list_item&amp;_cdi=5293&amp;_sort=r&amp;_st=13&amp;_docanchor=&amp;view=c&amp;_ct=1&amp;_acct=C000050221&amp;_version=1&amp;_urlVersion=0&amp;_userid=10&amp;md5=7699b2d0246d99270b4c17372db20116&amp;searchtype=a"><em>Vibrational Spectroscopy</em></a>.</p>
<p><em>“The method utilizes existing equipment and software, is easy to use,  requires minimal sample preparation, does not require data  interpretation, can be performed by non-technical personnel, has a short  run time and is functional across a wide range of raw materials and  adulterants,”</em> wrote Champagne and Emmel.</p>
<p>Michael Lelah, technical director at NOW Foods, said that they have not found any raw material formats  or adulterant types for which the test does not work.</p>
<p><strong>The issue</strong></p>
<p>Deliberate <a href="http://www.nutraingredients-usa.com/content/search?SearchText=adulteration&amp;FromNews">adulteration</a> of products continues to be an issue for the dietary supplements  industry and can be either economically motivated adulteration (EMA) or  to <em>‘intensify a desired pharmacological effect’</em>, explained Champagne and Emmel.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.npainfo.org/index.php?submenu=GMPcert&amp;src=gendocs&amp;ref=NPAGMPCertificationProgramOverview&amp;category=GMPcert">GMP regulations</a> are widely accepted as a big step in the right  direction: The 2007 GMP regulations place the onus on product  manufacturers to ensure the quality of their raw materials is  sufficient.</p>
<p>Adulteration does still occur, however, and notable examples include  adulteration with erectile dysfunction drugs, weight-loss drugs,  melamine, and steroid compounds. Such issues have led some critics to  suggest that dietary products are ‘unregulated’. Lelah said the new  rapid screening test <em>“can help change this perception”</em>.</p>
<p><strong>The test</strong></p>
<p>According to the paper in <em>Vibrational Spectroscopy</em>, the test uses  ATR in combination with FTIR. ATR is a technique requires minimal-to-no  sample preparation and allows the sample to be examined directly in the  gas, liquid, or solid state. The NOW Foods scientists used a  PerkinElmer FTIR Spectrum One spectrometer equipped with a universal ATR  sampling system with a single bounce ZnSe/diamond crystal.</p>
<p>The test was applied to 84 raw ingredient chosen from a variety of product categories, including weight management, sports nutrition,  men’s virility, and protein-based products. Mathematical comparisons  using appropriate software produces a report bearing a ‘Pass/Fail’  assessment.</p>
<p><strong>Moving forward</strong></p>
<p><em>“This method is adaptable to new concerns and new raw materials, providing even greater flexibility and utility,”</em> wrote Champagne and Emmel.</p>
<p><em>“Additional studies are being conducted to determine if a  microspectroscopy method could be able to provide even lower detectable  concentrations on raw material samples. Further investigation into the  applications of PCA or LDA is also being conducted.”</em></p>
<p>Lelah confirmed that these studies are indeed underway, but there have been no new updates.</p>
<p><strong>Industry acceptance</strong></p>
<p>Commenting on the new rapid test, Michael Lelah said the company hopes  the industry will consider using the approach to test for adulteration  in their ingredients. <em>“NOW Foods has been using this tool for over a  year to inspect sports supplement ingredients. It has insured that no  adulterated products reached the marketplace,”</em> added Lelah.</p>
<p>The method has been shared with a variety of association FDA, AHPA, NPA, ABC, and NIH, said NOW Foods.</p>
<p>Speaking to NutraIngredients-USA.com, Cara Welch, PhD, scientific and  regulatory affairs manager for the Natural Products Association (NPA)  said she was <em>&#8220;excited to see a paper like this coming out on behalf of the industry. </em></p>
<p><em>&#8220;The screening test is very applicable to industry, and the detection limits do cover the deliberate adulteration aspects,&#8221;</em> added Dr Welch.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Natural Products Association (NPA) recently contacted Health Canada, the federal department responsible for health governance in that country, regarding an erroneous statement on the agency’s website concerning dietary supplements and natural health products in the United States. The site stated that products from the United States were <strong>“…not subject to mandatory review, approval or quality requirements, including appropriate testing for identity, purity or potency of active ingredients.”</strong></p>
<p>John Gay, NPA’s executive director and CEO, contacted Health Canada’s Minister of Health, Leona Aglukkaq, writing that “The dietary supplement industry is, indeed, <a href="http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ6LX0Hu3ckpcM2x4YxvM0JcsoPlUgsKRwR9jaXJ4tS8u4FhYW3EA"><img class="alignright" src="http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ6LX0Hu3ckpcM2x4YxvM0JcsoPlUgsKRwR9jaXJ4tS8u4FhYW3EA" alt="" width="225" height="224" /></a>federally regulated in ways that ensure quality and safety.” Gay’s letter to Aglukkaq explained the current regulatory system in place, including how the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and other agencies such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) all have a hand in the federal oversight of dietary supplements, including safety, manufacturing, labeling and advertising of these products.</p>
<p>“With this expansive regulatory structure, and with extensive self-regulatory efforts, the U.S. supplement industry has an enviable safety record,” said Gay. “We respectfully request that you review and amend that statement to correctly reflect the U.S. regulatory structure for supplements.”</p>
<p>After reviewing the correct information provided by NPA, Aglukkaq replied that the erroneous statement had been removed from Health Canada’s website, <a href="http://www.npainfo.org/index.php?cid=1434276&amp;forward=126&amp;curlid=61325" target="_blank">www.hc-sc.gc.ca</a>, including the site’s FAQ section.</p>
<p>“It is very important that the public get accurate information about the regulation of our industry, particularly from governmental sources,” Gay said. “We at NPA want to thank Min. Aglukkaq and Health Canada for their prompt action in response to our request to correct the misinformation.”</p>

The growth also points out the incredible opportunities when contrasted with the <a href="http://www.nutritionnews.com/supplement/buyer-beware-when-purchasing-supplements-online/">sharp number of complaints lodged against the nutritional products category, according to the Better Business Bureau.</a></span></p>
